Chapter 12.3, Problem 14CYP
Summary Introduction

To explain:

Targets and modes of action of antiviral drugs, and strategies behind the administration of different types of drugs to treat HIV.

Introduction:

The antiviral treatment presents unique challenges. The differences in structure and metabolism guide the drug choice. However, viruses are infectious agents that rely upon the host cell for the vast majority of its metabolic functions. Disrupting viral function may require that the metabolism of the host cell also be disrupted to a greater extent than is desirable. Although viral diseases such as measles, mumps, and hepatitis are routinely prevented by effective vaccinations, unfortunately vaccines are unavailable for many serious viral diseases.
