Chapter 12, Problem 6F15
To determine

Internal rate of return:

It refers to the interest rate at which the NPV (Net Present Value) is zero of all the cash flows from any project or investment. This is computed because it helps in evaluating the attractiveness of an investment. The equation of IRR is as follows:

  0=P0 + P1/(1+IRR)+P2/(1+IRR)2+P3/(1+IRR)3 + . . . +Pn/(1+IRR)n

Where,

P denotes the cash inflows in each year.

The ATS corp. has recently evaluated a proposal to invest in cost-reducing production technology. According to the evaluation, the project would require an initial investment of 18,000 and would provide equal annual cost savings for five years. Based on a 10 percent discount rate, the project generates a net present value of 1,788. The project is not expected to have any salvage at the end of its five-year life. What is the project’s expected internal rate of return?
ThreeRivers Corp. is considering the purchase of a new piece of equipment with a life of 12 years. The internal rate of return of the project is 20%.  ThreeRivers has a required rate of return (hurdle rate) of 17%.   The project would have:       Multiple Choice   a net present value greater than zero.   a payback period more than 12 years.   a net present value of zero.   an accounting rate of return greater than 17%.
Cute Camel Lumber Company is considering a three-year project that has a weighted average cost of capital of 10% and a net present value (NPV) of $85,647. Cute Camel Lumber Company can replicate this project indefinitely.   What is the equivalent annual annuity (EAA) for this project?   Do the projects need to be independent or mutually exlusive for an analyst to use the EAA approach to evaluate projects with unequal lives?
