Chapter 11, Problem 3CQ
Summary Introduction

To explain: The way in which the structure of DNA underlies different aspects of its functions.

Introduction: DNA stands for “Deoxyribonucleic acid”. It is a nucleic acid present in most eukaryotes. A nucleic acid is a polymer present in the organisms and is made up of various subunits of nucleotide. A nucleotide that forms DNA is composed of three units. These units are “a pentose sugar, nitrogenous bases, and a phosphate group.” DNA is a “double-stranded” molecule. DNA is a complex molecule that stores all the genetic information.

Describe the structure and replication of the genetic material and basic aspects of the flow of genetic information from DNA to proteins
Background: DNA nucleotides (i.e A, T, G, and C) are naturally found in a paired, or bonded, arrangement (i.e. the double helix) within the nucleus of every cell. This structure makes the process of replication that occurs prior to mitosis and meiosis very reliable. The purpose of DNA, though, is not simply to make copies of itself, but to provide a set of instructions for the synthesis or "construction" of biomolecules, such as proteins. Why is transcription (i.e. the formation of an RNA copy of a given gene) a necessary step in the "construction" process highlighted above? What is the cell looking to ultimately do with this RNA information?
Describe the structure of DNA.   The two strands of DNA are antiparallel. What does the term antiparallel mean?       Describe how DNA is tightly packaged. Your description should include the terms histones, chromatin, nucleosomes and chromosomes.
