Concept explainers
Interpretation: If sugar dissolves more quickly in hot tea than ice tea thus, the statement that higher temperature increases the rate of dissolution of sugar in water needs to be identified as a hypothesis or theory.
Concept Introduction: A hypothesis is defined as an explanation for a phenomenon. A hypothesis can be tested using a scientific method. It is an explanation which is made on the basis of limited evidence. On the other hand, a theory is something which explains the particular incident or it is a generalized thinking. It is based on general principles which are independent of the explained thing.
Explanation of Solution
When sugar is added to hot tea and an ice tea, it gets dissolved in hot tea more quickly. The reason is higher temperature of hot tea. This reason can be stated as a hypothesis. This is because it is based on an observation which needs to be tested.
There are set of experiments which can be preformed and set of data needs to be collected to this statement in order to arrive on a conclusion. If same conclusion is made after different sets of experiments then it can be a theory.
Therefore, the given statement is a hypothesis.
