Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 44P

  2.3×109N

Explanation of Solution

Given info:

Area, A=78m2

The speeds at the top and bottom surfaces are 260ms and 150ms respectively.

Formula used:

Bernoulli’s equation is,

  P1+12ρv12=P2+12ρv22P1P2=12ρv2212ρv12ΔP=12ρ(v22v12)

The force on the roof is,

  F=Pressure×Area

Calculation:

The lift force must be equal to the pressure difference between the wing’s surfaces, multiply by the wing’s surface area. Now, assume the two surfaces of the wings to be at the equal height, where subscript 1 represents the bottom surface and subscript 2 represents the top surface. The Bernoulli’s equation becomes for the equal height is given as,

  P1+12ρv12=P2+12ρv22P1P2=12ρv2212ρv12ΔP=12ρ(v22v12)

Now substitute the value in this equation,

  ΔP=12ρ(v22v12)=12×(1.29×103)×((260)2(150)2)=12×(1.29×103)×45100ΔP=29089×103Nm2

Now the net force is,

  Fnet=ΔP×78 m2=29089×103Nm2×78 m2=2.3×109N

Conclusion:

The force is 2.3×109N .
