Answer to Problem 45P

The air pressure inside a given category hurricane is 96876Pa .

Explanation of Solution

Given info:

The wind’s speed, v=300Km/h=297×1000×13600=82.5m/s

Formula used:

  • The dynamic pressure is given as,
  •   Pd=12ρv2

    Where, Pd is dynamic pressure, ρ is the density if the fluid and v is the velocity of the dynamic fluid.

  • The Bernoulli’s equation is,
  •   P1+gh1ρ+12ρv12=P2+gh2ρ+12ρv22

Calculation:

Considered a point outside the hurricane at the same height of that point inside the hurricane which means that h1=h2 and also the first speed is zero because its air is still. So, the Bernoulli’s equation becomes,

  P1+gh1ρ+12ρv12=P2+gh2ρ+12ρv22P1+12ρv12=P2+12ρv22P1=P2+12ρv22(usev1=0)P2=P112ρv22

Now the standard atmospheric pressure is P1=101,300Pa . So, the above equation becomes

  P2=101,300Pa12ρv22

Now use the given values in this reduced equation and then the resulted outcome is

  P2=101,300Pa12(1.3kg/m3)(82.5m/s)2P2=101,300Pa4424=96876Pa

Conclusion:

The air pressure is 96876Pa .
