The fraction of iceberg above the water surface is 10.5% .

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

For ice, SG=0.917

For sea water, SG=1.025

Density of water, ρw=1000kg/m3

Formula used:

  • When an object is submerged into the fluid, then a force is provided by the fluid to the object, this force is known as Buoyant force.
  • This force is written as,

      FB=ρFVg

  • Specific gravity is the density of the substance divided by the water’s density, so,
  •   SGa=ρaρwρa=SGaρw

Calculation:

Now, substitute the given values in the above formula for calculating the density for ice and sea water.

  SGa=ρaρwρa=SGaρw

  ρice=SGiceρwρice=(1000)×(0.917)=917kgm3

And,

  ρseawater=SGswρw=(1000)(1.025)=1025kgm3

The net force is

  FBFib=0FB=Fig

Now, the buoyant force for iceberg is

  FB=ρiceberg×Vib×g

From the above two equation,

  FB=Figρsw×Vsw×g=ρiceberg×Vib×gρsw×Vsw=ρiceberg×VibVsw=ρicebergρsw×Vib

Now, percentage of iceberg above water =VaboveViceberg×100%

But, Vabove=VswVib

So,

  Vabove=VibVsw%=VibVswViceberg×100%=Vibρicebergρsw×VibViceberg×100%=(1ρicebergρsw)×100%=(19171025)×100%=10.5%

Conclusion:

The fraction of iceberg above the water surface is 10.5% .
