Chapter 10, Problem 39A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The problem with increase in the number of greenhouse gases needs to be explained.

Concept Introduction: When the gases in earth atmosphere trap the sun heat, it warms the earth surface this is known as the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide, water vapour, methane, ozone are the common greenhouse gases.

Explanation of Solution

Our earth surface cannot survive without greenhouse gases because it helps to warm the earth’s atmosphere or surface. Without any greenhouse gas, the earth surface will not get the actual temperature which is required for processes going around it.

Large number of greenhouse gases can deplete our ozone layer and increase the temperature of the earth’s surface. The atmosphere will become extremely hot which will bring difficulties for living beings to live as they will face respiratory issues. Due to greenhouse gases, there would be air pollution which is major problem for the environment to survive for any living beings. Also, the high temperature on earth causes the global warming.
