Chapter 8, Problem 7AWK
Summary Introduction

To review:

Problems that lead to the occurrence of a ventricular septal defect.

Introduction:

The human heart has four chambers two ventricles and two atria. The left side of the heart deals with oxygenated blood that comes from lungs and the left ventricle pushes this oxygenated blood toward all over the body. And the right side of the heart deals with deoxygenated blood and right ventricle pushes this blood toward the lungs. These two sides are separated from each other by a well-known septum.

VSD, or ventricular septal defect, is a condition that accounts for half of all congenital cardiovascular anomalies. In this condition, a hole exists in the septum, the muscular wall between the ventricles, which allows blood from the right and left side of the heart to mix. What sort of problems might this condition cause?
Figure shows the conduction system of the heart that transmit the electrical impulses for the coordination of cardiac cycle. a) Referring to the Figure , which part of the heart's electrical conduction is known as the “pacemaker” of the heart? b)Explain how D controls atria and ventricles which causes ventricular systole.
The exact cause of blood clotting in the left atrium of the heart during atrial fibrillation (AF) is not known. In part it might be due to blood stasis (not moving) or it may result in combination with endothelial cells damage.  (A) What are the potential mechanisms that might drive clotting and what markers might you look for in the blood to predict potential risk?  (B) Other than treating the arrhythmia, what other pharmacological intervention might be provided to AF sufferers?
