Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The given diagrams should be labeled as either strong, weak or non-electrolyte.
Concept introduction:
An electrolyte may be defined as the ionic compound that on dissolution in polar solvents dissociates to produces cationic and anionic species. There are three kinds of electrolyte namely strong electrolyte, weak electrolyte, and non-electrolyte.
The strong electrolytes are those which on dissolution dissociates completely into its constituent ions. However, weak electrolytes are partially dissociated. For example, sodium chloride and sulphuric acids are regarded as strong electrolytes while acetic acid is regarded as a weak electrolyte.
Benzene and urea that don not dissociate at all and are termed as non - electrolytes.

- What kinds of solute particles are present in a solution of an ionic compound? Of a molecular compound?arrow_forwardAmmonium chloride is a strong electrolyte. Draw a molecular-level picture of this substance after it dissolves in water.arrow_forwardThe following figures represent species before and after they are dissolved in water. Classify each species as weak electrolyte, strong electrolyte, or nonelectrolyte. You may assume that species that dissociate during solution break up as ions.arrow_forward
- Distinguish between the solute and solvent in each of the following solutions: a saltwater [NaCl(aq)]; b sterling silver (92.5%Ag,7.5%Cu); c air about 80%N2,20%O2. On what do you base your distinctions? Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5 silver and 7.5 another metal, usually copper.arrow_forwardA student weighs out a 4.80-g sample of aluminum bromide, transfers it to a 100-mL volumetric flask, adds enough water to dissolve it, and then adds water to the 100-mL mark. What is the molarity of aluminum bromide in the resulting solution?arrow_forward
