The ball hang time
Answer to Problem 5PP
Ball hang time is
Ball’s maximum height is
Horizontal distance travelled by ball before hitting the ground is
Explanation of Solution
Given:
Initial velocity of ball
Angle of projectile
Formula Used:
First equation of motion:
Where, v is the final velocity, u is the initial velocity, a is the acceleration and t is the time.
Second equation of motion:
Where, u is the initial velocity, t is the time, a is the acceleration and s is the displacement.
Third equation of motion:
Where, u is the initial velocity, v is the final velocity, a is the acceleration and s is the displacement.
Calculations:
The projectile is:
As
So, horizontal and vertical component of velocity will be:
And
Now, at the end of the projectile the vertical component of final velocity will be equal but opposite to the vertical component of initial velocity.
i.e.
So, using the relation
Now,
At maximum height that is top, the vertical component of velocity is zero.
Now, ball maximum height will be only dependent on vertical motion.
So, using the relation
Now,
As
So, horizontal distance can be obtained by using the relation
