Chapter 6, Problem 6CT
Summary Introduction
To describe:
The effect of hyperparathyroidism on the bones and whether doses of vitamin D would help to control the situation.
Introduction:
Hyperparathyroidism is a disorder where one or more parathyroid glands are overactive, and too much parathyroid hormone (PTH) is secreted. It leads to an increase in blood calcium levels, a condition known as hypercalcemia.

A patient has hyperparathyroidism because a tumor in the parathyroid gland is producing excessive amounts of PTH. How does thishormone affect bone? Would the administration of large doses ofvitamin D help the situation? Explain
Pituitary gland tumors can secrete excess amount of growth hormone. Describe the signs and symptoms that these tumors cause in an adult experiencing hypersecretion of the growth hormone.
Osteoporosis is a common disease in the elderly. Bones become less dense and more likely to break. Treatment of osteoporosis frequently falls under endocrinologists.
List two hormones that impact osteoporosis.
Explain how each one affects bone density.
