In some cultures, eunuch is responsible for guarding harems, which are the collective wives of one male. Eunuchs are males who that are castrated in their boyhood. Castration removes the testes, the major site of testosterone production in males. Because testosterone is responsible for sex drive in males, the reason for castration is obvious. As a side effect of this procedure, the eunuch tends to grow above normal heights. Explain how and why they grow taller?
If the number of Sertoli cells decreased in a male’s testes, which of the following effects would occur?
Select one:
a. The hypothalamus would enter hyperactivity, and GnRH levels would increase.
b. The testes would decrease in size, and LH levels would decrease.
c. The man’s sperm count would decrease, and FSH levels would increase.
d. Body changes for puberty would be delayed, and testosterone would decrease.
There is considerable advertising directed at men in their 50s and older suggesting that they can reverse the effects of aging by taking supplemental testosterone ( "maybe you have low T!") . Surprisingly, their doctors often comply with requests for supplemental testosterone with little or no testing to find out if their levels are actually abnormal. It turns out abnormally low testosterone levels are fairly rare in men, so not surprisingly, most men derive little benefit from the supplements. Often these patients, when they don't get the desired results, being guys, think increasing their dosage by 3 or 4 times would be better. What would be the effects of increasing the testosterone dosage on the following hormone levels?
A.
Low FSH; high GnRH, LH and estradiol
B.
Low LH, FSH and estradiol; high GnRH
C.
Low GnRH, FSH, and LH; high estradiol
D.
Low GnRH and LH; high FSH and estradiol
E.
Low estradiol; high GnRH, FSH and LH

- Cyclic GMP (cGMP) is a molecule that causes dilation of arteries. Cyclic GMP is normally broken down in the body by enzymes called phosphodiesterases. The drug sildenafil citrate (brand name: Viagra) blocks a phosphodiesterase enzyme in the penis. Select one: a. PID can lead to scar tissue developing on the Fallopian tube. This prevents the egg and the sperm from meeting, causing infertility. b. PID prevents the endometrium from forming. Progesterone causes an increase in FSH, thereby increasing the production of follicles. d. Birth control pills release estrogen. Estrogen feeds back to the posterior pituitary, causing an increase of LH and thereby ceasing the ovarian cycle.arrow_forward
