Chapter 5.4, Problem 7E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The reason of addition of ether to the nutmeg which is removed at the end of the experiment needs to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Lipids are biomolecules which involve in different biochemical reactions. They are special types of organic molecules which can only identify with the help of their physical properties, not by the presence of any certain functional group. Triacylglycerols are the most abundant lipids, which are triesters of glycerol, therefore in the formation of one molecule of triacylglycerol, three molecules of fatty acids react with one molecule of glycerol as given below;

  CH2(OH)CH(OH)CH2(OH) + 3 R- COOHCH2(OCOR)CH(OCOR)CH2(OCOR) + 3 H2O

Students have asked these similar questions
a. Sodium hydroxide and ethanol are added to 2-naphthol and then refluxed for thirty minutes before the addition of 1-bromobutane. Why is it important to allow this mixture to reflux before the addition of 1-bromobutane? b. Will sodium hydroxide or ethanol react most with 2-naphthol? Explain why one substance will react more with 2-naphthol than the other.
Why is it not required to take the melting point of the benzaldehyde starting material? a. The benzoin melting point is double the range of the benzaldehyde so just divide the product's melting point by 2. b. Benzaldehyde doesn't melt smoothly, it only turns into charcoal. c. Benzaldehyde isn't pure and we never take a melting point of an unpure solid. d. Benzaldehyde is a liquid. e. Benzaldehyde is a toxic substance.
