Chapter 52.6, Problem 2R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The relationship between haplodiploid sex determination and the evolution of eusociality in wasps, bees, and ants.

Introduction:

Eusociality is the social group of animals, which contains nonreproductive individuals and it occurs in insect groups or Hymenoptera that includes bees, ants, and wasps. Nonreproductive individuals are working members of the eusocial group where only a few reproductive female and male are necessary. Example of eusociality is honey bee hives with many working females (sterile) and one queen honey bee.

Asexual reproduction passes on 100% of the parent's genes but it is relatively rare. What are the advantages of sexual vs asexual reproduction? In some cases, species are hermaphrodites to reduce the difficulty in finding mates. What is the difference between simultaneous and sequential hermaphrodites? Why is "selfing" relatively rare?
What are the evolutionary advantages for an organism to reproduce both asexually and sexually?
What is apomixis? How is the ability to reproduce by apomixis advantageous compared with other forms of asexual reproduction?
