Chapter 52.2, Problem 3R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The evolutionary reason for gene expression cascade, which controls species-specific mating behavior.

Introduction:

Male courtship behavior in Drosophila is an example of fixed action pattern, which does not change and it is species-specific. A single gene called double sex (dsx) controls the gene expression cascades involved in developing male and female anatomy. A different splicing of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) results in different dsx products in males and females. Another single gene called fruitless (fru) controls the male courtship behavior where a female does not respond to male courtship behaviors of other species.

What is the signaling pathway that mediates the organizing activity of the A/P organizer in the Drosophila wing disc? Describe two experiments that suggest this pathway functions to organize pattern and promote growth along the anterior/posterior axis of wing imaginal discs.
Propose one or more explanations for why Hox genes exhibit a relation between their order on the chromosome and the timing of their expression, with Hox genes at one end of the complex expressed early and those at the other end expressed later.
William Jeffrey and his colleagues crossed surface-dwelling Mexican tetras that had fully developed eyes with cave-dwelling blind Mexican tetras. The progeny from this cross had uniformly small eyes compared with those of surface fish (Y. Yamamoto, D. W. Stock, and W. R. Jeffrey. 2004. Nature 431:844–847). What prediction can you make about the expression of shh in these progeny at the embryonic stage relative to its expression in embryonic surface fish?
