Chapter 52, Problem 5Q
Summary Introduction
To review:
The cost and benefit involved in parental care behavior of burying beetles.
Introduction:
The cost and benefit approach is used to analyze the fitness value of any behavior performed by a species. The three components of cost of a behavior include energetic cost, opportunity cost, and risk cost. Energetic cost is the amount of energy spent for a behavior and opportunity cost is other benefits lost due to a specific behavior or behavior that cannot be performed. Risk cost is the damages or injuries obtained when involved in a behavior.
