Answer to Problem 5.64P

  The ratio:- TroundTelliptical=2.67

Given information:

The equation:-

  Round casting;- d=0.3m   and  l=0.5m

Another casting is of elliptical cross-section:

  Major axis(a)=3×minor axis(b)Length:  L=0.5m

Cross-sectional area of elliptical casting is same as of round casting. Both casting are done at same conditions.

Explanation of Solution

Calculation:

First determine the surface area and volume for each casting shapes:-

Round casting:-

  ( A Surface)round=2πr(l+r)=2π×0.15×(0.5+0.15)( A Surface)round=0.613 m3Vround=πr2l=π(0.15)2(0.5)=0.0353 m3

Elliptical casting:-

  ( A elliptical)cross-section=( A round)cross-sectionπab=πr2also,    a=3b  3b2=r2  3b2=(0.15)2b=0.0866 mand  a=0.260 m    ( A Surface)elliptical=2π[ab+ a 2+ b 2l]( A Surface)elliptical=2π[0.26×0.0866+ 0.26 2+ ( 0.0866 ) 2×0.5]( A Surface)elliptical=1.002m2Velliptical=πabl=π×0.0866×0.260×0.5Velliptical=0.0353 m3

Now, as per the chvarinov’s rule.

Solidification time,

  T=C( Volume Surface area)2   T roundT elliptical= ( V A Surface ) round2 ( V A Surface ) round2T roundT elliptical= ( 0.0353 0.613 )2 ( 0.0353 1.002 )2T roundT elliptical=2.67

Conclusion: The ratio of solidification times of two casting is 2.67.

(9,00 Puanlar) 36 - A riser in the shape of a sphere is to be designed for a sand casting mold. The casting is a rectangular plate, with length = 25 cm, width = 15 cm, and thickness = 2,5 cm. If the total solidification time of the casting itself is known to be 4,5 min, determine the diameter of the riser so that it will take 2596 longer for the riser to solidify. Riser volume: V-(nD³/6 (D=diameter) Riser area: A-TD2 Casting volume: V-L-W-t (L-Length, W=width, t=thickness)
. A round casting is 0.2 m in diameter and 1 m in length. Another casting of the same metal iselliptical in cross section, with a major-to-minor axis ratio of 2, and has the same length andcross sectional area as the round casting. Both pieces are cast under the same conditions. What is the difference in the solidification times of the two castings?
(b) In casting experiments performed using a certain alloy and type of sand mould, for which n can be approximately taken as 2, it took 155 sec for a cube-shaped casting to solidify. The cube was 50 mm per side. (i) Determine the value of the mould constant in Chvorinov's rule. (ii) When the same alloy and mould type are used to make a cylindrical casting of diameter 30 mm, what is the maximum length of the cylinder if the maximum solidification time is limited to 1 minute?
