Concept explainers
To Explain:The fall of the skydiver by parachute.
Answer to Problem 22SSC
The falling velocity of the skydiver decreases due to upward acceleration of the parachute.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Newton’s law states that the net force on a object produces acceleration in a certain direction.
The upward drag force acts on the parachute the due the air resistance on the parachute. The weight of the skydiver acts in the downward direction. The net force of the parachute acts in the upward direction, so the parachute accelerates in the upward direction according to the Newton’s law. This net force reduces the falling velocity of the skydiver as the parachute is accelerating in the upward direction.
Conclusion:
Thus, the falling velocity of the skydiver decreases due to upward acceleration of the parachute.
