Explanation Osteoporosis is more prevalent in postmenopausal women and is also common in the elderly. The onset is early in postmenopausal women due to hormonal changes. This reduces the bone mineral density of the postmenopausal women. The several factors causes osteoporosis includes age, post menopause, insufficient dietary calcium, smoking and alcohol abuse. Ambulatory osteoporotic patients are those who are not compromised in walking aspects. Physical activity causes strain on the bones that helps to increase the bone mineral density. This property is exploited to increase the bone density in osteoporotic patients who have less bone density. Physical activity can prevent and treat osteoporosis. The osteoporotic patients are prescribed regular exercises spaced out between weeks to reduce the pain and increase their bone mineral density. Usually it is a six-week regimen. The physical activity targets balance, posture, gait, hip and stabilization, and coordination. The exercise should comprise of warm-up , workout and relaxation components The following is the six week exercise program for ambulatory osteoporotic patients: Week 1 Warm-up - Balance and co-ordination training Workout - Heel rises, toe pulls Relaxation -Slow dance moves Week 2 Warm-up - Warm-pool based Warm-up Workout - Walking and limb stretches Relaxation – Heel rises, slow dance moves Week 3 Warm-up - Breathing exercises, yoga, limb stretches Workout - Posture training, Swimming, walking in different surfaces Relaxation – Heel rises, slow dance moves that involves progressive muscle tensing and relaxing Week 4 Warm-up - Yoga, limb stretches, balance and co-ordination training...
