Introduction:
During labor the cervix gets shorter and thins out in order to stretch and open around the baby’s head and hence, this shortening and thinning of the cervix is called effacement.
Explanation of Solution
Dilation is a term used for the opening of the cervix for the delivery of a baby. Both dilation and effacement refer to the thinning of the cervix that takes place to provide an opening from the uterus to the birth canal so that the baby can be delivered. In some cases, women dilate a few weeks before the due date and others dilate much faster. During this stage, the placenta is delivered.
