Smears are “developed” to create contrast and make inconspicuous features stand out. The process is called as staining, which involves the application of colored chemicals called dyes to specimens. Regardless of the magnifying and resolving ability of a microscope, the unstained cells of a fixed smear require staining to be viewed, which involves adding color to the specimen with dyes.
