Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Lewis diagram for Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) must be drawn along with resonating structures.
Concept introduction:
A Lewis structure is a drawing of molecule which represents the connectivity of atoms in the compound as well as the availability of lone pairs on different atoms.
Formal charge is the charge assigned on an atom after considering the valence shell electronic environment along with the number of lone pair on the atom.
Resonance is the delocalization of pi bonds in a molecule or ion. It is hypothetical concept used to explain bond length, bond strength and stability etc.
Partial double bonds are longer than normal double bond and shorter than normal single bond. This happens when resonance is taking place.
Peroxyacetyl nitrate contains one O-O linkage which is the peroxy bond.
