Answer to Problem 12Q

Solution:

In the full wave rectifier, four diodes are connected in such a way that during each half cycle two diodes are in forward bias connection, and the reaming two are in reverse bias direction, so that for every half cycle we got the positive output.

Explanation of Solution

Forward bias: When the positive side of the supply is connected to the p-type of the diode or negative side of the supply is connected to the n-type of the diode the connection is said to be forward bias.

Now consider the circuit diagram of the full wave rectifier

First half cycle of AC wave: when the upper terminal is positive and the bottom terminal is negative

During the first half cycle it is clear that diodes Physics: Principles with Applications, Chapter 29, Problem 12Q , additional homework tip 3are in forward bias, while diode D1 and D4 are in reverse bias connection. So we obtain the output during the first half of the cycle.

Second half cycle of AC wave: when the upper terminal is negative and the bottom terminal is positive

Figure.3

During the second half cycle it is clear that diodes D1 and D4 are in forward bias, while diode D2 and D3 are in reverse bias connection. So we obtain the output during the first half of the cycle.

Thus we obtain the output during each half of the A/C supply and we got the current rectify.

The output of full wave rectifier is as follows
