What is the function of a pigment?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Explain the function of pigment.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

The pigment is a colored material, that insoluble in water. Pigments are inorganic compounds and they absorb only certain wavelengths of visible light. The light of other wavelengths are reflected or scattered.

The pigment is the chemical substance that exhibits the wavelengths of all the visible light. The primary function of the pigment is that absorb color to create subtractive color effects and the pigment, that makes the visible light to appear more colorful.

The pigment provides the color to the roots, stem, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Based on the pH value, the pigments appear blue, purple, red, and other dark colors.

Plants, algae, and the skin of animals consist of a particular type of pigments, which provide colors and can absorb some wavelengths.

Conclusion:

The pigments take part in photosynthesis, which uses the green pigment chlorophyll that absorbs as much light energy as possible.
