Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

There are two types of spectrum. They are a continuous spectrum and a discrete spectrum. The light which composed of a wide and continuous range of colors called a continuous spectrum on other hand only the dark and bright lines are called a discrete spectrum.

Explanation:

Tungsten filament has a property of low resistivity and high conductivity. It emits radiation when heated. The spectrum of this radiation is called blackbody radiation.

A light filament has a huge number of electrons and they can operate at a temperature more than Conceptual Physics: The High School Physics Program, Chapter 28, Problem 45A and can emit any frequency. So, the lamp filament emits a continuous spectrum. When the gas is heated, the atoms in the gas absorb energy corresponding to its electrical resonances and that light does not have the capability. So, the gas lamp has a discrete spectrum.
