What is a delta?
The term delta.
Answer to Problem 15RQ
When stream flows into a sea or bay, then sediments are deposited forming a fan shape which is called a delta.
Explanation of Solution
The stream flows toward the large water bodies carries a huge amount of sediments and rock with it. While moving in forward direction, it gradually losses its momentum. Due to this loss in energy, the speed of the stream also gets reduced. This causes the stream to lose its capability to carry sediments and rock. These changes further cause stream to dump the sediment between its paths. The larger particles deposit first, followed by smaller particles farther. This dumped sediment load forms a fan-shaped deposit known as delta.
Conclusion:
Therefore, when stream flows into a sea or bay, then sediments are deposited forming a fan shape which is called a delta.
