Interpretation:
The environmental issues related to the nuclear waste are to be mentioned.
Concept introduction:
The Yucca Mountain Nuclear repository is a special nuclear waste management plant in Nevada.
Answer to Problem 105A
The Yucca Mountain nuclear waste plan was initiated in the 1970s. Yucca Mountain lies 90 miles away from Las Vegas, Nevada and this place was suggested by the congress to be used as a nuclear waste storage facility besides the Nevada nuclear test facility. The geological site was created from volcanic eruptions and the subsequent tuff rocks which solidified into the shape of the structure.
Explanation of Solution
The Yucca mountain was highly studied for large amounts of waste disposal and was found to be a good site because of its volcanic composition and the safety that its underground reserves would provide, but the project was opposed by the people of Nevada and the department of Energy was not able to deposit wastes due to this opposition. Till date, the Yucca mountain repository is an incomplete project awaiting litigation.
