Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The ferromagnetism and paramagnetism needs to be compared.
Concept introduction:
Ferromagnetism show strongly magnetized ferromagnetic substances when placed in magnetic field. Paramagnetism show weakly magnetized paramagnetic substances when placed in magnetic field. Both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic substances are magnetized in the direction of the induced field.
(b)
Interpretation:
The process of roasting and reduction needs to be compared.
Concept introduction:
In roasting, sulfide ores are heated at higher temperatures to extract metal from it. Reduction is a chemical process in which electrons are gained and oxidation state of the species decreases.
(c)
Interpretation:
The hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy needs to be compared.
Concept introduction:
Hydrometallurgy uses aqueous solution for the extraction of metals from its ores whereas pyrometallurgy process involves the physical transformation of materials to form valuable metals.
(d)
Interpretation:
The chromate and dichromate need to be compared.
Concept introduction:
Both chromate and dichromate are oxyanions of chromium. In chromate, there is 1 Cr atom and in dichromate there are 2 Cr atoms present. The oxidation state of Cr is same in both the ions.

The aluminum is present in solution as AP. The solution is made basic with ammonium hydroxide, NH.OH, and the aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH): (FW 78.004), precipitates. This gel is filtered in a porous glass crucible, rinsed with dilute ammonium hydroxide, ignited, cooled in a desiccator, and weighed. The resulting alumina, Al:O: (FW 101.94), weighed 0.1605 g. Why is the solution filtered after acid dissolution? • Why rinse with ammonium hydroxide solution? • What chemical transformation takes place during ignition? (Show the balanced chemical equation) Why use a desiccator during cooling? • Calculate the weight percent Al (AW 26.9815) in the sample.arrow_forward
