Kyle Boulard, a 35-year-old male, is believed to be one of the primary causes of the a bus accident on Route 91. Passengers on the bus reported that Mr. Boulard was clearly intoxicated when he boarded the bus. According to these reports, Mr. Boulard behaved erratically, appeared disoriented, and left his seat and staggered down the aisle. Just prior to the accident, he had stumbled into the driver’s compartment. Paramedics found Mr. Boulard in a disoriented state when they arrived on the scene, but noted only minor injuries. A “fruity acetone combined with alcohol” smell was noted on his breath. What follows is a summary of the notable test results:
General | Blood | Urine |
BP: 95/58 | pH: 7.1 | Odor: “fruity acetone” |
HR: 110 | Glucose: 345 mg/dl | pH: 4.3 |

Which of the following statements regarding the client is correct? Question 80 options: a) Glucagon should be administered to stimulate glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver b) An injection of insulin will decrease ketone-body production c) The client should be started on a glucose infusion to help them regain consciousness d) The client's blood glucose level is well below 4.4 mmol/Larrow_forwardHigh-sugar diets have been associated to NAFLD, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. - Certain malignant tumors of the pancreas cause excessive production of insulin.Affected individuals exhibit shaking and trembling, weakness and fatigue, sweatingand hunger.a) What is the effect of hyperinsulinism on the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids, and lipids by the liver?b) What are the causes of the observed symptoms? Suggest why this condition, ifprolonged, leads to brain damage.arrow_forwardRenota, a 51-year-old Slavic woman, lived in Romania with her family on a pig farm. She routinely slaughtered pigs and cooked pork for family meals. She had a wide variety of recipes that called for pork. A few days after preparing one of her famous pork dishes, Renota experienced diarrhea, abdominal pain, and chronic indigestion. She went to her family physician and explained her symptoms to him. The physician, who knew the family well and was familiar with the family business, immediately suspected a bacterial or parasitic infection. A stool sample for routine bacterial culture and O&P study was collected from Renota and submitted to the local diagnostic laboratory. Routine processing procedures were conducted on the stool sample. Gross examination of the stool revealed a portion of the infecting worm (Fig. A). An egg, measuring 36 by 25 um (Fig. B), was seen on the permanent O&P slide. No intestinal bacterial pathogens were isolated. 1. - A 27-year-old male of Mediterranean descent presented to his GP complaining of fatigue and some discomfort and pain in his abdomen. During the examination, the GP noted some mild splenomegaly and tenderness. On closer examination, some scleral icterus was noted. Subsequent lab results showed marginally elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and bilirubin, and a slight decrease in haemoglobin. Describe the likely clinical scenario for this patient.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a correct cause of a diabetes mellitus symptom? 1) decreased installation of GLUT transporters causes glucosuria 2) saturation of aquaporins causes polyuria 3) saturation of GLUT transporters causes hyperglycemia 4) decreased glucose in cells causes ketoacidosisarrow_forwardType 1 diabetes mellitus (unlike type 2 diabetes mellitus) is often discovered when a person suffers from the sudden occurrence of ketoacidosis.
