According to the article “Rubbing Hands Together Under Warm Air Dryers Can Counteract Bacteria Reduction” (Infectious Disease News, September 22, 2010) washing your hands isn’t enough—good “hand hygiene'' also includes drying hands thoroughly. The article described an experiment to compare bacteria reduction for three different hand-drying methods. In this experiment, subjects handled uncooked chicken for 45 seconds, then washed their hands with a single squirt of soap for 60 seconds, and then used one of the three hand-drying methods. After completely drying their hands, the bacteria count on their hands was measured.
Suppose you want to carry out a similar experiment and that you have 30 subjects who are willing to participate. Describe a method for randomly assigning each of the 30 subjects to one of the hand-drying methods. (Hint: See A Note on Random Assignment on page 50.)

- The recommended intake for Calcium for adults is 1000 mg per day. A researcher is interested to determine if adults with high income level have more calcium intake than the recommended amount. A hypothesis test is conducted. What is the alternative hypothesis?arrow_forwardExplain the Lady Tasting Tea Experimentarrow_forwardIn an observational study it was found that people who had received the flu shot this year had better blood pressure readings, on average, than people who did not. Can it be claimed that the flu shot is the cause of the lower overall blood pressure? Why or why not?arrow_forward
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur most frequently in planting and cutting sports such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball. National collegiate athletic association injury data show that female athletes injure the ACL more frequently than their male counterparts do. A sports medicine professor wants to test this claim. He surveyed 5 universities that had both men's and woman's basketball, soccer, and volleyball and asked them how many grade 3 ACL tears they had during the past 5 seasons. Using the following results, are women at greater risk than men for ACL injuries? (use a standard deviation of 0.01, one tail test).
