Chapter 23, Problem 16P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The principal product in the given reactions is to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Phenols contain hydroxyl (OH) functional group attached to an aromatic ring. In the ring, the electron withdrawing groups (EWG) decreases the electron density and thus; stabilizes the phenoxide ion. On the other hand, the electron donating groups (EDG) increases the electron density and thus; destabilizes the phenoxide ion.

Phenols undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction due to the presence of the hydroxyl group that activates itself towards electrophilic substitution. The hydroxyl group causes the resonance effect due to which the ortho and para positions of phenol ring become electron rich.

Compound A (C6H12O2) reacts with water, acid, and heatto yield compound B (C5H10O2) and compound C (CH4O).Compound B is acidic. Deduce possible structures of compounds A, B, and C
(c) Compound C has a molecular formula of C6H14O. The IR spectrum shows strong absorption bands at 2980, 2850 and 1100 cm-1. The 'H NMR spectrum shows three singlets at &H 1.25 (9H), 3.23 (3H) and 3.79 (2H). Based on the spectral data given, deduce the structure of compound C.
