Question
Chapter 23, Problem 12TYK
Summary Introduction
To analyze: The structure of capillaries and their function in exchanging substances with the surrounding interstitial fluid and the process of exchange inside the capillaries.
Introduction: The exchange of ions, gases and metabolites takes across the membrane of the capillaries through the small pores. These molecules move from the capillaries to the interstitial fluids by the force generated by the blood pressure and the osmotic pressure gradient of the metabolites in the capillaries. The net movement causes the diffusion of the gases, ions and metabolites between the small pores of the capillary wall.

Describe the structure of a capillary. Explain how this unique structure is suited to its function (the site of exchange of materials between blood and nearby cells).
Compare the structure of the three types of capillaries.Explain the various ways that materials pass throughcapillary walls.
Explain why a blood vessel with a large internal diameter has more difficultycontracting than a vessel with a small diameter, even though both are exposed to the same transmural pressure. Apply this principle to the ability of capillaries to withstand high intravascular pressure.
