Concept explainers
To determine:
The function of guard cells, stomata, epidermis, and trichomes.
Introduction:
Plant cells act as building blocks for plants. These cells contain chloroplast, where photosynthesis occurs. It is an important process in plants for making food, by using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Explanation of Solution
Guard cells − These are special plant cells that are found in the epidermis of leaves, stems, and other organs that exchange gas. Guard cells function to regulate influx of carbon dioxide into the leaves and regulate water loss from stomata of leaves.
Stomata − These are tiny pores in plant tissue that are responsible for gas exchange. The most important function of stomata is control influx and efflux of carbon dioxide and water respectively from the leaf.
Epidermis - It is the layer of cells that cover the stem, leaf, flower, root, seeds, and fruit. Epidermis is covered with waxy cuticle that protects plant from infection, injury, and water loss.
Trichomes − These are hair like structures on plants, lichens, and algae. Trichomes act as insulators by acting as barrier between leaves and frost. They reduce evaporation in plants.
