Concept explainers
To Explain: An indicator.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:An indicator differentiates between an acid and a base.
An indicator is an organic compound, which can easily differentiate between an acid and a base.
An indicator changes color when brought in contact withacids and bases.
One such indicator is litmus paper. Blue litmus paper turns red color in acids and Red litmus paper turns blue in bases.
However, a common indicator can neither tell the pH level of different solutions nor the strength of a solution.
Some common indicators are litmus paper, phenolphthalein, and methyl red.
Conclusion: An indicator is a substance that determines, whether a solution is acidic or basic by changing color.
