Hydrocarbons release a lot of energy when ignited. Where does this energy comes from?
The source of energy released during ignition of hydrocarbons.
Answer to Problem 3TE
In the combustion reaction there is a formation of gaseous product which leads to the increase in entropy and bond breaking provides the energy.
Explanation of Solution
In the combustion of hydrocarbon, the hydrocarbon will react with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, water, and heat. The amount of water, carbon dioxide, and heat depends upon the carbon chain and the hydrocarbon properties. In the combustion reaction, there is a breaking of the bond of reactants which provides the energy. And also, there is an increase in entropy which also helps in the evolution of energy. There are two types of combustion one is completed combustion while another is incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. When the hydrocarbons burn with a blue flame then it is called complete and if it burns with a yellow colour flame then it is called incomplete combustion. For example-
Conclusion:
Therefore, in the combustion reaction there is a formation of gaseous product which leads to the increase in entropy. And bond breaking provides the energy.
