Chapter 22, Problem 13TE
To determine

That the boiling point of ether is lower than the boiling point of alcohol.

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 13TE

The boiling point of alcohols is higher than ether mainly due to the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding which is lacking in ethers and hydrocarbons.

Explanation of Solution

Intermolecular Hydrogen bonding occurs between the electronegative element like oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine atom of one molecule and hydrogen of another molecule attached to the another highly electronegative atom.

Both alcohols and ether have similar molar masses but in alcohol due to the presence of the oxygen element there occurs a strong intermolecular hydrogen bond between the oxygen atom of one alcohol and hydrogen of another alcohol molecule connected with oxygen atom.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the boiling point of alcohols is higher than ether because of intermolecular hydrogen bonding which is lacking in ethers and hydrocarbons.
