Question
Chapter 22, Problem 22.34QP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Compounds A and B are stereo isomers having violet color and green color respectively. These compounds are whether geometric isomers or optical isomers has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Co-ordination compounds exhibit structural isomerism and stereoisomerism. Stereoisomerism deals with three dimensional spatial arrangements of atoms or groups of a molecule. There are two types of stereoisomerism – Geometric isomerism and optical isomerism.

Explain the differences .
geometric isomer and optical isomer
Please draw the stereo structures of the following cations:
a) cis-[Co(NH3)4CI2]*
b) trans-[Co(NH3)4C12]*
32. The compound [Ni(NH3)2C12] is paramagnetic and does not exhibit structural or geometric
isomerism, whereas [Pt(NH3)2C12] is diamagnetic and exhibits geometric (cis and trans)
isomerism. Deduce their molecular geometries.
(A) [Ni(NH3)2C12] is square-planar;
[Pt(NH3)2C12] is tetrahedral
(B) [Ni(NH3)2C12] is tetrahedral;
[Pt(NH3)2CI2] is square-planar
(C) [Ni(NH3)2C12] is tetrahedral;
[Pt(NH3)2CI2] is octahedral
(D) [Ni(NH3)2C12] is octahedral;
[Pt(NH3)2C12] is square-planar
