Question
Chapter 20, Problem 5CRCAQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The effects of arteriosclerosis on arteries.
Introduction:
Arteriosclerosis is a condition that generally occurs in old age due to the changes in the arterial system. The arteries supply oxygenated blood from the heart to the body parts. The thickness of the arterial wall plays a major role in controlling the pressure of blood flow. The pulmonary artery is an exceptional case that supplies deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs for its purification.

Describe some consequences of the loss of elasticity in the conducting arteries, as occurs in arteriosclerosis (“hardening of the arteries”).
Explain how a deep vein thrombosis in a large vein in theleg can result in a life-threatening condition such as astroke or myocardial infarction.
A) Perform an analysis of the stenosed artery diameter D and lengtn c using the Bernoulli equation to determine an expression for the pressure drop across the segment of artery for a blood flow rate
(Q). Create a well labelled diagram indicating the area of analysis and variable names and state all
relevant assumptions made in your analysis. You snould assume that the stenosis creates a rapid
narrowing of the artery, and that friction is not negligible.
B) Explain how your analysis would change following insertion of the stent.
