Interpretation:The charge for the electron in coulomb is to be determined.
Concept introduction:In 1909, Millikan conducted an oil-drop experiment to calculate the charge of an electron. In this experiment, tiny charged droplet of oil was suspended between two electrodes by balance of gravitational force with upward drag and electric force.
As the density of oil was known, the scientist could determine masses of the droplet from their radii.
