Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The correct example of phospholipid needs to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Lipids are
Phospholipid is type of lipid that contains a phosphorus atom. They are mainly found in cell membrane of plants and animals. They are also called as phosphoacylglycerol as two fatty acids with phosphate group and alcoholic group are bonded to the glycerol molecule through ester linkage. Because of the presence of ester linkage between glycerol and fatty acids, phospholipids are hydrolyzable lipids.

- Fats belong to the class of organic compounds represented by the general formula, RCOOR', where R and R' represent hydrocarbon groups. What is the name of the functional group present in fats? What functional group is common to all saponifiable lipids?arrow_forwardWhat element is always present in proteins that is seldom present in carbohydrates and lipids?arrow_forward21-100 What are the functions of a cell membrane? To what extent is a bilayer that consists entirely of lipids able to carry out these functions?arrow_forward

- 21-85 Which of the following statements is (are) consistent with what is known about membranes? (a) A membrane consists of a layer of proteins sandwiched between two layers of lipids. (b) The compositions of the inner and outer lipid layers are the same in any individual membrane. (c) Membranes contain glycolipids and glycoproteins. (d) Lipid bilayers are an important component of membranes. (e) Covalent bonding takes place between lipids and proteins in most membranes.arrow_forward22-53 Do iron and zinc ions play role in protein structure? If so, what is the role for either or both?arrow_forward21-101 Glycerophospholipids tend to have both a positive charge and a negative charge in their hydrophilic portions. Does this fact help or hinder lipid packing in membranes? Explain.arrow_forward
