Chapter 19, Problem 18P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: A detailed description of photosynthesis light reaction should be compared with the given diagram and the defects are to be identified.

Concept introduction: Photosynthesis is the process which stores energy from sunlight as chemical energy in glucose. The phenomenon happens in the chloroplast of plant cells. Photosynthesis takes place in two main stages - light reaction and dark reaction. The diagram given in the question is an incomplete representation of light reaction.

Chemiosmosis. ATP synthesis in chloroplasts is usually light dependent; it does not happen in the dark. When researchers shifted isolated chloroplasts from a low pH solution to a more alkaline (higher pH) solution, ATP synthesis occurred even in the absence of light!  This was an experiment used to support the chemiosmosis mechanism of ATP formation in chloroplasts. Why? What would happen if the isolated chloroplasts were shifted to a lower pH solution? What would be the results if the above experiments were performed in the presence of light? If these experiments were performed in mitochondria instead of chloroplasts, what results would we expect?
Life requires energy.  Describe the basic principles of bioenergetics in an animal cell.  How is the flow and transformation of energy different in a photosynthesizing cell?  Include the role of ATP and enzymes in your discussion.
Help is appreciated. Think of an unusual eukaryotic species in which its ATP synthase has 12 subunits for its c ring. How many ATP molecules can be produced per pair of electrons that traverse the respiratory chian starting at Complex I?   A. 2 ATP/2e- B. 1 ATP/2e- C. 0.5 ATP/2e- D. 1.5 ATP/2e- E. 3 ATP/2e-
