Textbook Question
Chapter 18, Problem 18CQ
Some people believe that constructing a reservoir for water storage is a bad idea because (1) it might change the downstream habitat below the dam and (2) the reservoir will eventually fill with silt and sediments. Write a “letter to the editor” that agrees that a reservoir is a bad idea for the reasons given. Now write a second letter that disagrees with the “bad idea” letter and supports the construction of the reservoir.

A reservoir has a catchment area of 30 km. The maximum
rainfall over the area is 2.5 cm/hour, 45% of which flows to
the reservoir over a weir. Find length of the weir. The head

What is the net water budget for a region where the annual rainfall is 890 mm and the potential evaporation is 635 mm?
A watershed has an area of 9.84 x 102 km2 in a region where the average annual surface runoff is 305 mm. What is the volume of the surface runoff?
Tracer dye is introduced to a sand and gravel aquifer in a gravel pit. The dye appears 28.5 hours later at a spring located 3.8 km away from where the dye was introduced. What is the groundwater flow velocity?
A 300-gallon water storage tank is filled by a single inlet pipe, and two identical outlet pipes can be used to supply water to the surrounding fields (see the figure). It takes 5 hours to fill an empty tank when both outlet pipes are open. When one outlet pipe is closed, it takes 3 hours to fill the tank. Find the flow rates (in gallons per hour) in and out of the pipes.
