To review:
The following:
1. The requirement of an herbicide resistance gene in an agricultural plant.
2. The problems that arise from the microbial transfer of herbicide resistance genes into plant genomes.
Introduction:
Gene transfer system is a method of transfer of the desired gene into the plants and animals that need to be genetically engineered. This recombinant strain of bacteria consists of a gene that is substituted with genetically identified and modified genes. For example, agrobacterium tumefaciens transfer an herbicide-resistant gene into an agricultural plant with the help of the integration of T-DNA (transferable-deoxyribonucleic acid) into the plant cell without induction of tumor genes.

- Some antibiotic drugs fight infection by interfering with DNA replication, transcription, or translation in bacteria. Indicate whether each of the following antibiotic drug effects is on replication, transcription, or translation. HINT Each answer (replication, transcription, and translation) is used only once for the following: a. Rifampin binds to bacterial RNA polymerase. b. Streptomycin binds bacterial ribosomes, disabling them. c. Quinolone blocks an enzyme that prevents bacterial DNA from unwinding.arrow_forwardRegarding the cultivation of animal cells in vitro, it is correct to state that: *(Only one statement is correct) a) Transformed cells differ from normal and established cells in that they have the ability to proliferate indefinitely in culture b) Transformed cells derive from isolated and dissected tumors, constituting cell lines that have limited cultivation time c) The genetic instability presented in normal cells makes them preferential models for the production of recombinant proteins d) Cells cultured in adhesion must be periodically expanded, through the use of enzymes such as trypsin e) The metabolism of carbon sources in the culture medium by animal cells generates products such as lactate, which positively influence their productivityarrow_forwardIn order to transform a bacteria, the cell wall should be perforated either through physical or chemical means. true or false?arrow_forward
- In a process of production of a recombinant protein by E. coli cells, it was observed accumulation of acetate in the culture medium. In this situation, it can be said that: (a) certainly the process in question was being conducted in anaerobiosis (B).Acetate accumulation is advantageous for the process as the acetate formation reaction generates 1 molecule of ATP (c)Knowing that decreasing the temperature of the process causes a reduction in the rate of glycolysis, this could be a strategy to reduce the accumulation of acetate (d).the acetate formed can be re-assimilated by the cell if the glyoxylate pathway is activated at some point in the culturearrow_forwardBacterial conjugation has medical consequences. For example, certain plasmids contain genes that code for toxins. The causative agent of a deadly form of food poisoning, E. coli 0157, synthesizes a toxin that causes massive bloody diarrhea and kidney failure. This toxin is now believed to have originated in Shigella, another bacterium that causes dysentery. Similarly, the growing problem of antibiotic resistance is partly attributable to the spread of antibioticresistant genes among bacterial populations. Antibiotic resistance develops because antibiotics are overused in medical practice and in livestock feeds. Suggest a mechanism by which this extensive use promotes antibiotic resistance.arrow_forwardSome bacteria may have higher mutation rates than others following exposure to UV light. Discuss a reason why this might be the case. What experiments could you do to determine whether this is a likely possibility?arrow_forward
- I read that vinyl chloride exposure is associated with an increased risk of a rare form of liver cancer (hepatic angiosarcoma), as well as brain and lung cancers, lymphoma, and leukemia. But my question is what gene(s) are being mutated by this type of taxic gas?arrow_forwardEngineered bacteria are commonly used and cultured in pharmaceutical laboratories to produced drugs like insulin. However, during one instance, with the desire to increase the rate of insulin production, one scientist tried to modify the process and put another substance (chemical x) in the growth medium which is chemically almost the same to the substance (chemical x’) normally put in the medium. After which, the scientist found out that the amount of insulin produced in the medium decreases as compared to the normal production. Again, within the context of our discussion, explain the possible reason for the observed result.arrow_forwardSuppose you have a cell-lysis sample containing genomic DNA and a complex mixture of proteins and debris. Describe different commonly used analytical methods to i) separate and purify DNA contents from other cellular contents. ii) amplify a gene of interest if present in the genomic DNA.arrow_forward
- Recombinant DNA techniques are used to custom –build bacteria for two main reasons: to make a multiple copies of desired genes and to obtain useful proteins. Give an example of each of these applications in the field of pharmaceutical, medicine and agriculture.arrow_forwardGenetically modified foods are products produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. Golden rice, Flavr Savr tomatoes and Roundup Ready soyabeans are products of this technology. Discuss the advantages of these three genetically modified crops. Name ONE (1) strategy to produce transformed plant cells.arrow_forwardTo promote genetic diversity in bacteria, it has been found that some species have a genetic mechanism that allows them to increase their mutation rate during DNA replication. A scientist hypothesizes that the functions of the following two enzymes would be impacted by this mechanism. In each case, state if you agree and provide a reason for your answer. i) DNA primase ii) DNA polymerase IIIarrow_forward
