Chapter 16, Problem 58EAP

Angular Momentum of a Close Binary. Some close binary star systems have orbital periods as short as several days. Here we will estimate the angular momentum of such a system with two  1 M S u n stars in a circular orbit having an orbital period of 10 days.

  1. Determine the average orbital separation of this system using Newton’s version of Kepler’s third law.
  2. Determine the average speed of each star with respect to the center of mass of the system.
  3. The center of mass of this system lies at the midpoint between the two stars because their masses are equal. The distance of each star from the center of mass is therefore equal to half the orbital separation. What is the angular momentum of each star with respect to the center of mass?
  4. Suppose the Sun had the same angular momentum as these two stars combined. Estimate the speed at which the Sun’s surface would be moving around the Sun’s rotation axis.
  5. How does the speed from part d compare with the escape velocity from the Sun’s surface? What would happen if the Sun were spinning this fast?

Center of Mass. b)The mass of the Earth is 6x1024 kg and the mass of the Moon is 7.4x1022kg. The distance between their centers is 380,000 km. How does the distance between the CM of the system to the center of the Earth compare to the Earth’s radius of 6,400km?
C6M.9 Astar with mass M and radius R collides with another star of massM and radius R, and coalesce to form a new star at rest whose radius is R. Assume that initially the colliding stars had angular velocities with opposite direc- tions but the same magnitude | What is the magnitude and direction of the final star's angular velocity? (Express the magnitude as a fraction of )
A distant exo-planet has a mass that is 100 times bigger than the Earth's, and orbits at a distance 2 times as far from its star as the Earth does from our Sun. The star has the same mass as our Sun. What is the velocity of the star about the center of mass of the exo-planet/star system? Mass of Earth = 6.0 x 1024 kg. Distance of Earth from Sun = 150 x 109 m. Mass of Sun = 2.0 x 1030 kg.
