The vector sum of the fields due to by q1 and q2 is the value of the electric field at the midpoint between q1 and q2 . Thus, both fields point to the left as shown in above the sketch.

The electric at a point mid-way between the two charges is given by a relation as,

  E=k|q1|(d2)2+k|q2|(d2)2=k(d2)2[|q1|+|q2|]

Here, d is distance between the charges, k is electro-static constant (9×109Nm2/C2)

Calculations:

Conversion of units of charges from micro coulomb to coulomb as

  q1=8.0μC=(8.0μC)(106CμC)=8.0×106Cq2=+7.0μC=(+7.0μC)(106CμC)=+7.0×106C

Conversion of units of distance between the charges from cm to m as, d=8cm

  =(8cm)(0.01mcm)

  =0.08m

To obtain electric field mid-way between the two charges, substitute +7.0×106C for q1

  8.0×106C for q2 ,and 0.08m for d,(9×109Nm2/C2) for k in the equation

  E=k(d2)2[|q1|+|q2|]=(9×109Nm2/C2)(0.08m2)2[7×106C+8×106C]=8.44×107N/C

Conclusion:

Electric field midway between the charges is 8.44×107N/C towards q2 .
