Chapter 16, Problem 20P
To determine

To Find: The third position of charge

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 20P

The third charge must be placed at 118 cm from the charge q1 .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Two charges are:

  +4.75μC

  3.55μC

Formula used:

Electrostatic force between two charges having magnitudes q1,q2 , having distance r can be determined by Coulomb’s law as,

  F=kq1q2r2

Here, k is electrostatic constant (9×109Nm2/C2) .

Calculation:

Below sketch shows positions of the charges.

  Physics: Principles with Applications, Chapter 16, Problem 20P

Conversion of units of given two charges from micro coulombs to coulombs,

  q1=+4.75μC=(+4.75μC)(106CμC)=+4.75×106Cq2=3.55μC=(3.55μC)(106CμC)=3.55×106C

For no net force, electrostatic force between the charges q,q1 should equal to electrostatic force between q,q2 mathematically,

  kqq1(r+x)2=kqq2x2q1(r+x)2=q2x24.75×106C(18.5cm+x)2=3.55×106Cx24.753.55=(18.5+xx)21.157=(18.5+xx)x=118cm

Conclusion:

Therefore, to experience no net force, the third charge must be placed at 118 cm from the charge.
