Concept explainers
Introduction:
Tay-Sach’s condition occurs when the enzyme that helps in the breakdown of fatty substance called gangliosides is absent. It is rarely occurring inherited disorder. As a result, gangliosides accumulate in body and builds up to toxic levels in brain which may affect the nerve cell functions of the individual.
Answer to Problem 6STP
Correct answer:
The correct option is B.
Explanation of Solution
Explanation correct answer; B. This symbol shows that both parents are carriers and it is necessary for both the parents to be carriers for the offspring to be diseased, as tay-sach’s disease is inherited in autosomal recessive manner.
Explanation incorrect answer; A. This symbol represents normal parents so no offspring produced will be affected.
C. This symbol represents affected male partner and a normal female so the offspring produced may be a carrier but not affected.
D. This symbol represents affected female partner but male is normal so the offspring produced may be a carrier but not affected.
