Concept explainers
To fill:
The correct term in the given blank.
Introduction:
Researchers use genetic engineering to manipulate DNA. Recombinant DNA can be made by connecting fragments of DNA from different sources. This is inserted into a host organism’s chromosomes. The host organism uses the foreign DNA as if it were its own.
Answer to Problem 13A
Small circular DNA molecules that are found in bacterial cells are called plasmids.
Explanation of Solution
Large quantities of recombinant DNA molecules are needed in order to study them. A carrier is also called a vector. It transfers the recombinant DNA into a bacterial cell called the host cell. Plasmids and viruses are commonly used as vectors.
Plasmids are small, circular, double stranded DNA molecules that occur naturally in bacteria and yeast cells. They can be used as vectors because they can be easily cut with restriction enzymes.
