Introduction:

Thermal energy refers to the internal energy of an object. It is related to the temperature of the object which measures its hotness or coldness.

During phase change like melting of ice, boiling of water etc. thermal energy is added but the temperature remains constant. This is because the added thermal energy is utilized in breaking of old bonds and formation of new ones for phase change to occur.
